Hi there. Respectfully, you are conflating several issues. The AP shells are fired from barrels in a ballistic trajectory. The high velocity is mostly in a horizontal vector, not vertical. Thus a ship's armored band is on the sides of the ship, so as to defeat the horizontal velocity. The AP shells dropped from an airplane have little horizontal velocity, but are accelerated by gravity in a vertical vector. The decks were more lightly armored. (1) the thickness of armor is a function of the expected direction of incoming fire (2) horizontal and vertical vectors comprising a ballistic trajectory. You have conflated these topics. Respectfully and with imagination put aside: The force applied is a function the mass, velocity and material characteristics of a projectile. When that force is compared to the ultimate tensile strength of the decks, we can determine if the deck ruptures, or not. Force v Tensile Strength is a mechanical engineering topic and quite well understood.

Thank you Hornet! Attagirl!!

I believe that to be a sacrificial plug for the big guns. Kept sea water out, which would cause corrosion. As the first shot was fired, the plug would disintegrate under the near instantaneous creation of over pressure. And that is what you see.

@gregorywright4918 In the title sequence, you can see the plugs in the guns, right about the 0:06 mark. You may have to pause the video to see them, but they are there nonetheless! Cheers!
