Although its only briefly mentioned in this video, the thing that keeps folks off Amtrak long distance are the incessant DELAYS . Amtrak trains are constantly shuffled onto sidings, to allow freight trains through. Freight trains have priority, not passenger trains. There is a schedule but Amtrak cannot even come close to it, except on the high traffic corridors. Ridership would definitely increase if reliability increases. Right now, who wants to arrive 6 hours late?? We had one Amtrak Ticket Agent tell us he had no idea when our train would arrive, because it was held up upstream of us, without any indication of when it would be there. We finally just bailed and drove. We are not alone.
