Its only in the last century and a half that weapons have progressed from
'single shot, low rate of fire weapons'
to
'multishot, semi/fully automatic weapons'.
There have been nut jobs from time immemorial, yet now they have better tools to create mayhem.
Its only in the past few decades that news went from highly filtered, selective reporting to an absurd torrent of information. There aren't more nut jobs, there's just better reporting.
The nut jobs now have a stage. These acts are celebrated by their adherents, published by the media and amplified by the internet.
That combination has produced the current state of affairs. They have the tools and stage, mayhem is the result. Of course the internet can be a positive. I am not blaming the spread of information, be it positive or negative. Information is critical to reasoned thought.
Yet I can think of no valid reason for a civilian to have any full or semi automatic weapon, nor to have high capacity magazines. Why, for heavens sake, is it legal for a civilian to own a Thompson* sub-machine gun in this country? What possible pretense is valid?
I do support the rights of those who wish to enjoy responsible and legal gun ownership. Have a low capacity, low rate of fire weapon, if that floats your boat. What civilian needs a howitzer? What civilian needs a Thompson or any other jumble of letters and numbers, code for high capacity, high rate of fire?
