  1. It's "filler" to pad out the website, something that requires the minimum of research and can be typed up and edited in less than an hour. Lots of tabloids do the same thing.

  2. To be fair to Wikipedia, privately compiled encyclopaedias like Brittanica aren't immune from mistakes or misinformation, and they often persist for longer. So you can't really rely on those either.
