The sad thing is that the way she talks about Bulgaria really is how England used to be. You could buy some land, build a house, live your own way and no one would bother you, "An Englishman's home is his castle" was a saying for a reason. Literally the only reason a life like this isn't possible in the UK is because the government has made it so. How terrible that people now have to leave to have that again.

@Luke-ye5ul Yes, you could, England is dinstinctive among most European nations of having a centuries long tradition of middle and working class land ownership, not just an aristocracy but a middle class landed gentry and a working class Yeomanry. Nothing like, for example Russia or Germany where almost all land was indeed owned by the elite until the late 19th and early 20th century. It's the reason why Britain, unlike France, Germany, Eastern Europe, Russia etc was not swept by the wave of revolutions that occurred across Europe between 1789 and 1918. You seem like someone who just wants a simple narrative to project your resentment onto instead of engaging with the reality. 100 years ago a working class person could buy their own small piece of land and build a home on it and live as they wished. Most people before WW1 had never even interacted with the British state in any way, they were free to live their lives as they wished.

@dave4511 I mean really? Why can't we? Again, the beautiful historic cities and villages we have all over Britain? Guess what, they were all built "willy nilly" - people aren't stupid, the idea that the government needs to control everything to make it work is nonsense. The ugly post WW2 developments the country is covered with, were all built after we had planning laws. But fine, for modern sensibilities you can justify building "standards", i.e the quality things need to be built to, but the idea that we need our entire country micromanaged by local government "planners" is just ridiculous. Simple limits like "you need x amount of land to build a house of x size, you can build x floors high" etc would easily deal with most issues. A country if meant to be for people to live in, not a museum for rich tourists and the wealthy only. I'd love to see ordinary people be able to by a bit of land in the country and build a house if they want.

It's actually a really nice house and land in terms of basic design and layout, and the area is beautiful. I'm always amazed by the sort of people who want to leave places like this to work a full-time minimum wage job in "The West" and live in a tiny flat in some dreary big city. A lot of people seem to just be complete followers, they go where everyone else goes, do what everyone else does etc. I mean I get it if you're moving away to become a rocket scientist or the next Elon Musk or something I understand, but let's be honest, that's not 99% of people. Everyone obsessed with gaining "status" from other people that's actually worth very little.
