  2. Ukraine had an in-built advantage when they had defences built, and the Russians didn't, both on offence (Russian defenders didn't have the advantage of built defences), and the defence (Russian attackers had to overcome Ukrainian built defences)

  3. Why don't the Russians do something "next level" like building permanent semi-circular raised earthworks to the west of basically every settlement they control? Would be a huge advantage, and even if the settlement was lost, the defences would be useless for the Ukrainians against attackers coming from the East. Basically like a modern version of city walls.
