And Singapore is the gate to SE Asia, as well as East Asia (at least by sea). We'll see whether PRC would cut it down by opening a canal somewhere on the Kra Isthmus...

@str2010 Hey I'm just saying that Strait of Malacca * could * be bypassed entirely, that'd end all the 3 countries that borders it. But before that happens, the Strait will always be an important part of the journey. I question a canal would be more accomodative than the strait anyway, when it comes to maximum ship sizes and capacity...

@madjames1134 Well it's definitely there just to ensure they have a grip on SE Asia. I question Russia would open their waters that easily, even to PRC. Plus you still can't reach the Mediterranean, India, Middle East and Africa through the Arctic - they collectively has way more people than Europe and North America combined.
