  1.  @LilOBX  You can have a working train system in less populated areas too. The swiss have a very good train system, in a country that is not exactly made for trains. They pay less than 400€ per head and year (+fares). How many thousands do US people pay for their street system (+gas and car cost)? At minimum way too much because they can't afford it today, and it will only get worse. Also even in the center of Tokyo you get more than a shoe box for 2K ;) The reason why those trains are so full morning and evening is because so many people use them to commute. "In the countryside" of Japan you can get a nice villa for 2K dollar.

  3. Not to metnion that a lot of the crime is probably because of the incredible bad infrastructure. Noise and stress from walking on "sidewalks", having nowhere to go to, job problems... people who are treated like shit tend to behave like shit. Compared to that, being in a high security prison in Norway is way better. At least they have a library close by and fresh air.

  4.  @SamOliver4  Crime is not a density problem. Just count the number of US suburbanites who are incredibly dumbfounded that, if you lose your wallet in Tokyo, chances are you not only get it back, but the money is still in!!!

  6. That seems to be a common topic. I have heard similar descriptions from several US airports. Favirote one is about the hotel literally just on the other side of a highway, but since the next on/off ramps are a bit away it is nearly a 20 minute drive.

  7. Zoning does not mean that that cities get car cities though. It depends on the laws. Japan has zoning laws too. And delightfully small, sometimes downright beautiful backstreets where nearly nobody drives (or owns) a car in the middle of the moloch named Tokyo.

  12.  @jasonarthurs3885  Shinjuku Station has 10 times the number of people using it than the Katy Highway. With probably the same space usage for rails.

  13. One of the most impressive facts about the Japan public transit I ever heard is that Shinjuku has roughly (nobody seems to really know O.o) as many people using it as the whole German train system.

  14. The only effective way is to nuke the place and wait until the radiation is gone. Or, alteratevly, wait for a really BIG Tornado or similar.
