That is the same in economy too. If you are a US citizen going to another country to have a better life, you are an expat. If someone from that country comes to the US, he is an "economic refugee", aka lazy shit. I guess that is the same everywhere. Here in Germany we even have a regular TV series about people going from Germany to e.g. Vietnam and building e.g. a farm there. But if a Vietnamese comes here: Why don't you stay in your country and build a business there!?!

Of course it's possible! I mean, you even managed English! ;)

@OrientalPearl I would have laughed loud and afterwards be called the "gaijin who laughts about accidents". Sigh.

@FiorianCanuck I like to use the "negative" gaijin in a funny way. Like (when talking about me having a little accident) "Oh look, this Gaijin can't even eat Ramen without making the whole table dirty" or "Gaijin cannot understand ticket machine". Basically playing with what Japanese might think what foreigners don't know, often a bit self-mocking.

I think in most companies formal education is highly important. I have no knowledge about job hunting, but there has to be a reason that getting into a high ranking university is so important that there are training courses for babies for the entrance exam for the kindergarden that is attached to the schools that are attached to a university. And if you want a government job you practically have to go to Keio for example.

It's totally possible to learn a language in 3 months. You only need to move to the country, never use your language - except for the 1:1 teacher that teaches you 4 hours a day. Then you study 4 hours a day on your own. And you activly immerse yourself (listening to people, watch TV trying to understand etc.) for another 4. That is 12 hours. Add 8 hours sleep. 2 hours shopping, eating etc. 2 hours feeling like shit with an immense headache. Do that for 3 month and you are - decently - fluent. Guess how many have done that. (Fluent. Not a native or master of language. But fluent enough that you have no problems in daily life except maybe looking up specialized words. (Let's say a 10 year old child.))

Right! Kimonos and shrines, I can't get enough of them :D

Many student rooms are in old buildings or made for students who go home over the weekend and as such prefer saving money to having more space. My one was that too. Extremely cheap but all you got was a single 6 tatami (too lazy to calculate foot for you lol) room and a shower+toilet+sink + no space for a fat person bathroom. It did cost only 170€ I think was it including water and electricity.

@jamescurfman3284 Still it's near the normal Tokyo 1 person appartment ;) Actually I think it was 130sq feet (googled the math this time) plus bath and tiny door area (like 1 tatami). So maaybe 200sqf total. 10 tatami? But, as I said, it was dirt cheap and (6 floor) if you were a really really good jumper you might have been able to jump to the building where half of my lectures (and a small cafeteria) were.
2
@jamescurfman3284 That was a joke in case you aren't sure ;) Just to show how convenient it was (actually 100m distance, so no chance)

It's the same size as my space! But mine is only $550. Small town in Eastern Germany ;)

"kinpatsu" = blond kin is gold. And gin is silver, this always confuses me when it comes to the hair color :D

I can see why people are surprised if a black speaks fluent Japanese. How many are there in the whole of Japan? 100? It's like a person without legs driving a car. Intellectually you know they exist, but if you come across one you are surprised.
1
Guess why people who really speak 5 languages tend to be white haired and something like a diplomat or reporter.
1
The question that crops up is of course: Why are those people not given one of the many empty houses? You might no find them in Tokyo, but in smaller towns or villages there are definitely enough that nobody wants to use.

@darrenmcneece6299 Really? lol didn't even know such a thing exists. Just goes to show that religious fanatics are crazy I guess 😏

Let's hope those "small" ones decrease the stress in the ground so that no big one happens.

Re-Building other countries seems a bit stupid - but why not? I foyu take it like an amusement park. And as that it's sad to see the state the street is in. Like a (copyrighted for another 10 days) M. Mouse with stolen ears.

We should all have in mind that "Polyglott" and "fluent" are... well, fluent categories ;) I accept "basic fluency" starting at the point when you can do daily conversations and understand what happens in TV entertainment without concious effort. (Or another scale: like a 10 year old native) I don't include "can go to university in that language" or "have deep conversations about life, the universe and everything", that is full fluency ;) Language depends a lot on what you are used to. For example if Cathy Cat (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOMZWkPo7ao6yGaXc954U0w) speaks with Japanese, I understand both sides most of the time - I don't use subtitles on her videos. But if a monk would start talking about buddhist concepts I would be utterly lost. What should I say how much Japanese I understand? And if someone speaks 6 languages at the basic fluency level I mentioned above, that's okay for me to call polyglott.

Oh yes, keigo&Co. Horrible! I hate formalities even in my own language, so this is pure WTF for me :D
1
That must be the heaviest cupid I have ever seen! I like it! 😄
1
Just say Akiba ;) In case you don't know CathyCat has made a few videos about this ear cleaning (at a lot nivcer place) 2 years ago. Maybe that started the Akiba trend? :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfH4OwgINSA

According to the most reliable source - anime - many schools in japan have archery clubs so that male love intersts have a place to be found.

Either that bridge marking is wrong or you are a lot smaller than I thought 😅

Every country has 2 groups of untouchables: Those nobody can touch and those nobody wants to touch. The size of those two groups tells you how good a country is to live in.
