Expecting women to be able to defend themselves and their homes (likely together with the old men and youngster) in absence of their warriors is one thing (especially since that mostly means against bandits or "scouting" parties, not big armies). To be on the battlefield regularily is a whole other question. No doubt that happened, but the rate was probably the famous one in a million chance that if you kissed a random warrior, it would be a woman.
