That is the thing I can't understand for the life of me. The ususal answer is: But it is different from state to state or even county! To which I think: How often do stores cross borders?

Same here in Germany. 1,5 years ago toast bread (the "student food") at ALDi was 79c, not it's 1,49€, that's nearly double! Fish sticks also +50%. The cheaper cheese 30% and the mid range 20%. Cheap Pasta and rice was out for quite a while, now 50% more.

Keep in mind those were prices of average range. At the discounter you can get eggs for 2,29 (or last week 1,79€ in a sale). Similar for the other items.

It's strange, isn't it? Land prices in the US are lower because the country is so wide. Gas prices are lower, so transport is a lot cheaper. How does it come that groceries are such more expensive?

Switzerland is also the country with the highest salaries, which of course increase prices. And Norway isn't exactly known to be the breadbasket of the world, so... yeah, US is expensive especially when you remember they are one of the biggest agrarian producers.

@darrylrichman Yes, you can't sell it for less than you bought, but then you can sell it for the same price and that doesn't include personell, building, energy... On the whole discounters in Germany often operate with a 2-3% profit margin and supermarkets rarely jump above 10%.

Well, would make no sense to compare a 80s computer. Those things probabyl cost millions now ;) But that is a general problem of the one number doesn't fit anyone. For example, if you live on minimum wage or similar substitute income, it does not matter that new cars and oversea airplane travels have become cheaper (for a long time that was the case), but those have lowered the inflation number.
