  1. They never made money because the ticket price are so high. A train net is a prime example of "use makes it cheaper". You have to pay for the track building and maintenance regardless if you run one train a day or one ever ten minutes. Adding a half-full train actually lowers costs per passenger. And now think what happens if the trains run full...

  3.  @peanutbutterisfu  Trains are only expensive because airplanes and cars externalize so many costs. And that the train system is abysmal in teh US is nothing new. I think it's overkill to have somethign like the maglev, which does the Toyko-Osaka in just 20 minutes more than an airplane, but a 200mph train should be easy for many parts of the US. And as I said in other places, a conventional 160km/h net (the fastest that cheap 200 year old tech can do) would make even New York - Washington something you can take by train in a reasonable time, if you use express trains.

  4.  @walterwheeler1035  Don't forget the huge subsidies for cars. Depending on study, you start with 2000€ and end up with more than 5K. Per car, per year. (That 5K of course includes stupid calculations like 700€ for worktime lost in traffic jams)

  5.  @verves2  Yes, the price of fuel is the same, that's why it's stupid to give discounts. While flexible pricing can dsitribute the load somewhat, that's a tiny amount of the total pasengers. Railroads all around the world have figured out how to not send trains out when nobody wants to ride, like 3 a.m., I am sure Amtrak can learn that too.

  6. It starts with "fastest train in the western hemisphere with 150mph" and I go WHAT??? at 40 seconds. I nkow out of my head there are at least 4 big countries that have trains that go faster than that in western europe alone. I hope the video gets better.

  7.  @TohaBgood2  No, train is always cheaper. It's hard to add up everything, but just as example: Swiss, with it's incredible train services in a train-unfriendly geography pays a bit over 400€. Meanwhile every car costs the German 2000-5000€ depending on study in indirect costs. Trains cost too, but a lot less. Only direkt costs, the Swiss put 12% of their transport costs into rails, but 76% into streets. Cars are the least effective mode of transportation under the criteria of monetary costs, environmental cost, space usage, pollution, capacity. The only thing they excell, if they have free streets that is, is flexibility.
