Because most people who have experience with both (e.g. US suburbia and EU village) will show you the middle finger if you ask them to move back from their 3.000 people village to their former 3.000 people suburbian wasteland. There are people who want to live in a cabin in the woods. There are people who want to live in nothing that is smaller than a 20 storey building. But most just want an objectivly good place to live, means quite with close amenities and work, preferably with some green. A huge unused front yard where you can't even put up your laundry to dry is not high on the priority list.

In Europe those isolated houses existed too, of course, but they have consolidated to villages or even agricultural towns (as in a few thousand people inside a wall who mostly still work on their fields in front of the wall)

My company has it's local office in the middle storey of an old 3 storey villa. First and third are normal renters living there (Since we don't have customers coming that isn't a problem with noise etc.)

The crucial point is that they have an vastly bigger influence on daily life than anybody else. The money they have is not only missing from other people's life, it's also creating - intentionally or unintentionally - an imbalance of power that is damaging to the society as a whole. The group you say is so small can - and often has - dicided on the life or death of thousands of people. Or even millions ina few cases. Without any democratic control. That is the structual bad point, and it doesn't matter if those people are good or bad.

Cars and building windows kill millions. Also coal power plants also kill birds (and humans) with their emissions, more than wind mills generating the same energy.

  114. The Vegas Loop can actually carry less than a single lane street. It's a glorified taxi stand, so you can't have street level traffic because people are constantly crossing the "street". (It's a stroad really.) Also nobody explained to me what happens to the people in the cars in the tunnel if the taxi stands for 10 cars (3 of them and you need ~100 cars for the theoretical capacity) are full. Are they looping infinetely?

How do you know if you are called which are R and which are U? Of course everyone could try to call back, which would just increase confusion. That meant that you started right at the bottom, worked hard and would then be put to election on the city level. Work hard, get put one level above and so on. That is how most of the politicians in that time were grown. It not only meant a connection to the people from the lowest level on, but it also meant that normal workers would be on the ballot (not unskilled, they very seldom made it, but learned workers and mini business owners were more than half of the German parliament). Today is very different, ox tour is a rarity and the most represented profession is lawyer.

That would be a violation of their free contract. It's like when the rules about paint get changed. I think it's overkill to have somethign like the maglev, which does the Toyko-Osaka in just 20 minutes more than an airplane, but a 200mph train should be easy for many parts of the US. And as I said in other places, a conventional 160km/h net (the fastest that cheap 200 year old tech can do) would make even New York - Washington something you can take by train in a reasonable time, if you use express trains.

There might be a biological instinct contrary to "more birth after a catastrophe" that lowers the wish for children in crowded societies. Also climate change may lower intentions by the knowledge that the world will be harder. B) Family structure. children - putting aside that they played a lot more alone - were generally raised in a net of social contacts, not least grandparents. With so many people living away from relatives (or not having them at all) or informal groups, the uncertainty and stress and probabyl real time investment per child is a lot higher.

Not a bad thing in itself - but the first time I drove there, 2 days after it was finished, it was night, so I was not seeing it good. They had put up a 30 sign together with the speed bumb. I was driving 30 - in fact a bit slower when I saw the bump, let's say 27 - and when I reached it, the bump nearly broke my car. I heard the springs (or whatever) hitting themselves. The bump was something like 3:1 shaped. It was changed after a few month because the city was flooded with complains, it even was in the newspaper as a warning to not drive the allowed speed there. How did nobody realize it was a bad idea to place a bump fit for a "walking speed driving" zone to be in a 30 part of a 50 street?

We have 3 bus lines converging here going to the next big cities. Service once an hour. Travel time for 20/30km air distance about an hour too, because it goes through all the villages. Price is about what you would pay for fuel in a car if you go full distance. That actually one of the better connected places for "rural" one. A lot of more remote, small villages in Germany have 2-5 buses a day, generally at school/work time start and finish.

They pay less than 400€ per head and year (+fares). How many thousands do US people pay for their street system (+gas and car cost)? Also even in the center of Tokyo you get more than a shoe box for 2K ;) The reason why those trains are so full morning and evening is because so many people use them to commute. "In the countryside" of Japan you can get a nice villa for 2K dollar.

Thanks to the pi*r² that is a LOT of additional pickup area (Which can also be served by buses for those who don't ride bikes for whatever reason.) Have a 10 minute bus service and train access and you can have 30-50K people in this area with about 20% need for cars compared to the standard US city.

  238. My grandma used to do a hm... 5 mile walk every other day until that age. Then she had a Pulmonary embolism. Doctor said most people her age would have died. She could not do that walk after that but still lived another decade until everything broke down. Really died of old age, was nearly blind at the end, but the lungs still worked fine for her age. Yes, at that age it is more dangerous so you probably should not go the full 25kph your ebike can do, but biking (or walking or...) makes you so strong that you are less frail than others.

Though I have seen temporary police speed checks where it's clearly the infrastructure's fault for (slight) speeding and I don't approve of that. One was where you had to drive uphill through slight curves, so you pressed more on the pedal. After that it's sloghly downhill in a straight line. If you don't drive that daily, you invariably end up a bit too fast. And naturally you would go off the gas and just coast... and that is where they were standing. It was not even a dangerous area, except right at the start there weren't even houses on one side, so practically nobody crossing the street. I drove that daily for 3 years and saw probably 5 people crossing. In that place, getting ticked for driving 56km/h instead of the allowed 50 km/h does feel like pure money making.

Add 8 hours sleep. 2 hours shopping, eating etc. 2 hours feeling like shit with an immense headache. Do that for 3 month and you are - decently - fluent. Guess how many have done that. (Fluent. Not a native or master of language. But fluent enough that you have no problems in daily life except maybe looking up specialized words. (Let's say a 10 year old child.))

  273. The main problem is getting students to speak. I know it was for me too. You just don't want to speak if you are not sure or slow. I once took a test from a university which told me I had a very good understanding of vocabulary for a native English speaker. I never have been inside an English-speaking country in my whole life. It's just exposure to other languages and reading scientific stuff. If you put me in a kitchen I would probably fail at telling someone how to cook an egg in English. So if exposure is the problem, expose the kids to a weekend of a school trip where everyone swears to only speak English. Make it a game. They can use a dictionary in a pinch, but otherwise use your head, arms, legs or whatever you can find. Everyone is the same, so it's okay. That probably makes them better at speaking than a year of classroom lessons.

Like the US army today. Or a PMC. 4) mercenaries. Fight here today, there tomorrow. Most important differentiator: You might fight tomorrow against the group you are today fighting for. Of course the borders are blurry, especially between the last 2 groups. Wagner might have gone against Putin but that alone does not make them mercenaries instead of PMC. That was more a strike, they didn't get paid by Ukraine to do it. On the other hand I don't think Blackwater would send it's troops against the US military in $CivilWarCountry So while both have a lot of mercenary characterstics I would put both of them still in 3)

But, as I said, it was dirt cheap and (6 floor) if you were a really really good jumper you might have been able to jump to the building where half of my lectures (and a small cafeteria) were.

As a German I want to mention that the East German government fell in 1989 when it was clear that A) the government could not send in the German army because they would very likely refuse and B) Russian tanks would not shoot down the protests as they had 30 years earlier. What started as a few hundred ended up in Leipzig literally (if you ignore taht people might be coming from outside the city) everyone who could walk on the streets. Maybe Luka is not that disliked but I still think he is in a very similar position. And about energy efficiency etc. Then about 3 years ago I saw several independ videos/ TV docus saying this was not the case. The additional cost (for reasonable beauty) is often negligible compared to the cost of the whole building. e.g. in Germany there is a law for 5% "art in the building" for public buildings, that would cover much of it. It's just when you conciously decide against it that you get the 1000 hours back. Either by using bad quality parts that steer the LEDs (LEDs itself are practically undestroyable from use) or overusing them (which the commenters here say is what is happening). It's like in TVs where there is a part that is weak to heat and very predictably breaks after a certain time if too hot, that is placed myseriously always near the only big heat source on a huge circuit.

  484. Where I live in Germany we had 30cm or maybe even more in that single week. (Hard to judge because the wind in the first 3 days was so strong you would have places totally bared and snow piled up nearly a meter just around the corner). After 2 days they just gave up on clearing the sidewalks with machines. No more space to move the white stuff to. The people dug trenches in front of their houses and snow was carried out of town by building/agricultural equipment/cars so that cars could drive. I don't know how many years it have been since I last saw a car getting stuck on top of snow! And thanks to the wind, some parked cars looked like the result of some SF design competition :D

The USA temporarily took the top there with 90% maximal tax rate, which actually lowered the richest richness a but for a short time. The welfare state is been slowly eroded in the last decades, inequalities have risen and so has right wing extremism. In the USA it's the Tea Party that has taken over the GOP which now tries to install an autocracy based on their ideology with the project 20025. In Europe several countries already have far right parties in the government. Germany just had 2 state elections where the AfD got ~30% of the votes. That is the party that is (in those states) officially "right wing extremist" with a fascist (court accepted term, which in Germany is a very heavy weight word) in the top. I don't know about you, but between a fascist World II and a fair redistribution where people who get millions out of dividends pay more than 10% income taxes, I choose the latter.

For the rest you are allowed to earn money on the side ;)

In Fukushima we very very close avioded reactor 3 exploding. The one with Polonium. If that had exploded and wind would have been in the major direction, the stuff would have come down on the Tokyo area. The whole 30-40 million plain would have been needed to avacuate, without taking anything because a grain of polonium too small to even see can kill you. I can't see that working in any way. And with the wind as it was in reality, it would have splitted Japan in 2 halves, with a 100km or so wide area where no one would be allowed to enter, not to mention to live. But even putting the radioactive dangers aside, modern nuclear power plants may be the safest, but also the most expensive. That is why not even power companies want to build them. You can have solar electricity for 3-6 cent in Germany and wind for 6-8 cent (Likely to continue going down). Nuclear is somewhere in the 2 digits, rising. Oh, and that is if you can actually run nuclear. Have you heard that Germany had to burn gas to produce electricity for France because their reactors were down because of A) costly unplanned maintenance B) heat. Turn out if rivers no longer have water, you have nothing to cool the nuclear reactors with. Btw. have you heard of "climate change"?

If High speed is too expensive, then conventional 100mph can still be very good connectors. Just for example I picked 2 towns randomly from google maps: Charleston and Columbia in South Carolina. I don't know anything about these, as I am German. Looked like medium big towns, so here we go: Distance 120 miles, one 150K/800K inhabitants (city/area), the other 163K/830K people. I don't think you will find a single city pair in Germany with these metrics that hasn't at least a 140km/h connection between them with hourly (or better) service, even in very rural areas.

Meanwhile every car costs the German 2000-5000€ depending on study in indirect costs. Trains cost too, but a lot less. Only direkt costs, the Swiss put 12% of their transport costs into rails, but 76% into streets. Cars are the least effective mode of transportation under the criteria of monetary costs, environmental cost, space usage, pollution, capacity. The only thing they excell, if they have free streets that is, is flexibility.

For example in Germany there is this hideous financial rule that if you don't rent out (to a certain % of) market rate, you are doing it as a hobby and cannot deduct all maintenenance costs from the taxes. So if you have people that you want to give a cheap home, you also have to shoulder a part of the costs yourself instead of only not making profit.

  837. I once was in such a heavy rain. We were 5 people in a relativly small car. Shortly before the small town, it started to rain heavily. And then more and even more. The last meters we only found our way because we knew where to drive basically. Visibility was down to 20-30m. When we parked in front of the door, nobody wanted to get out of the car. (As I said, 5 people cramped in very humid conditions lol) After 5 or 10 minutes the rainfall visibly got lighter. We got out the car and into the house. Just in those 2m distance, maybe 10 seconds outside, we were wet to our underwear.

In Germany for example there are official categories for under 50 people, 50-2000 (village), 2000-5000, 5000-20000 (literally small town), 20K-100K, 100K+ (and million cities but we have so few it's not a real category). But normal people just differentiate between village and city (we only have one word Stadt for town/city ) and may add small or big to it, similar to the above definitions but without respect to the official numbers, purely subjective.
