TSMC came up with their 7 nm node back in 2017 while EUV only became available in 2021. So, TSMC's 7 nm too was based on DUV. If they had no issue with yield, then there's no technical reason why SMIC will have a yield issue. At best, it might take SMIC a few years for them to catch up. Or, maybe they are already there, let's see.

@TraitorDuck My point remains the same. TSMC's 7nm node was produced in high volume with DUV. So, we know that technology isn't an issue for SMIC here.

@xhy12 That's because, with EUV, they're traversing through uncharted territory. Not so much with DUV. The Asianometry video "How TSMC keeps getting better" discusses the nature of the problem these companies face with new processes. So, the question is, how much experienced SMIC's teams are.

Why is everyone commenting on bubble tea industry? What's in there? What's the relation with bubble tea and semiconductor? Or all you guys are just professional spammer?

I think the analysis since @10:43 is a bit hasty and misleading: 1. ASML and TSMC aren't US companies. They are not US to protect. Unless, Netherlands and Taiwan are de facto US colonies. 2. I don't believe Chinese semiconductor ecosystem is anywhere close to what Japanese companies were in their heyday. At best, China will earn semiconductor independence, not even semiconductor security during wartime.

@shazmosushi Bubble tea isn't popular in the area I live in. Like at all. So, can you explain the fuss about it? In a few worlds, perhaps?

@Martin If you patent something, and I reproduce the technology in-house, using only the information available in the patent paper, it's not stealing. It's just a similar technology, which can be patented in the same nation, with just little modifications. How little? If your team of lawyers are really crafty (which they are for big companies), you'll just need to change the documentation. Happens all the time bruh, so, maybe wake up from idealist dream? Also, tell me how do they just "steal"? If you're talking about corporate espionage, US companies still tops others in that by a wide margin. So, maybe, drink a little less cool aid.

@Martin It happens all the time in the US. And patents don't protect inventive people. It allows them to invent a thing once and then reap the benefit for the next 15 years directly and next 50 years indirectly, just by lobbying and anticompetitive practices. If they were really inventive and hardworking, then they udn't need "guns" to protect them. As the open source ecosystem shows, if you're actually inventive, you can pretty much always stay ahead. Don't trust me? Just answer one thing - most of Google's software is open source. So, how on earth they're one of the world's leading company? Perhaps the leading in terms of innovation?

@LaowaiDaveJCP China is still far behind in many things - chip IPOs are all American or held by US allies (ARM, Samsung etc). EDA tools are also all American. But those, along with lithography, are just more technological gap to surmount. Where China is indeed behind are: 1. Semiconductor industry ultimately feeds on material research. Chinese unis are awesome, but still behind to both Japanese or US companies. 2. Technology is ultimately market driven, and most of the chip market is again US companies. Japan had access to US market, not so much for China. So, they'll have to build the entire thing. Imagine China building another Nvidia. Imagine lining to buy Chinese GPU. Until that happens, China is way off.
