I can tell you exactly what leads to a happy life: having at least some successes. As long as you get some successes, even if it's only 5% or 1% of the time, you can keep moving forward and be happy. It's when your success rate drops below 1% that you're in trouble. At that point, you brain has learned that no matter what you do, you fail. And when you think back, all you can pull up are failures. Then you look around you and see all your friends and acquaintances doing fine, meanwhile you're not. It get very difficult to keep trying and putting in effort when time after time you fail until eventually, success isn't even something you can imagine as a possibility.
