  1. This is why big data is not science. Doing science requires reproducibility and replicability. That means publishing your calculations and data sets, methods and procedures. Big data is a black box with a Wizard of Oz behind the curtain.

  6. FruchteisMitErdbeer I think we are in basic agreement about this. I should have been more clear about stating my domain was that of business. Thank you for clarifying the distinction. I find the dynamics of this area to be fascinating. Business will take full advantage of published research, but only rarely give back. (Though to be fair there are some funded chairs and research projects.) Marketing and sales management have been driven by statistics for around 75 years. Big data is an extension of that. But when I talk to the consumers of these numbers, I sense there is a large wishful thinking component to it. After all, they can still see sales and increases even if they are a little off, simply due to the large numbers.
