The C2 can not use smoothbore ammo, It has to be for a rifled barrel. The reason it's rifled is because it's more accurate and able to hit a target at greater distances than smoothbore. The Dorchester armour is an upgrade of the Chobham used on C1 and by the US on the Abrams.

@babalonkie - I can't find anything on smoothbore/rifling ammo as you suggest. Either way I can't see what the point would be, and if it could be done the army don't think it's worth it, hence C3 + smooth bore. People have been saying the MBTs days are numbered for a long time but it's still here and will be in foreseeable future albeit in smaller numbers. As we've seen with the Ajax fighting vehicle fiasco, the MOD will always find a way of screwing it up and wasting money on replacing equipment. And even if as you say C2 is obsolete, they're still miles better than what the Russians are peddling.

@babalonkie -.. except they would be laying around what's left of your house... As it would have been blown by the tank long before it even rolled up your street... So good luck with your squeeze bottle and box of matches but I'll stick with the Tank.

@teatotal8822 - unlike the Leopard of course which was successfully used by the Turks in Syria ( Except for the 10 blown up of course.) The C2 has the longest confirmed kill, it also has probably the best armour of any main battle tank.... Compared to the old soviet crap the Russians and Ukrainians have been using.. it's a huge improvement.
