Britain ( and individual Countries within) was originally Catholic. The history and internal conflict within these Isles has been shaped by religious differences between Protestant and Catholic more so than anything else. It has decided who rules and how we're ruled..and how we live our lives. Luckily we now live in a predominantly secular society which benefits everyone , ironically the Religious extremists more so than anyone else ! When that "settled balance'" which has been achieved over time becomes destabilised the consequences are severe for everyone.
