The only reason we are "desperate for students" is because the Universities have become businesses based on turnover. The need for foreign students ( especially Chinese) is purely a need for money to keep these bloated businesses going. And it won't be long before the Chinese realise they don't need to come here once their Universities surpass ours. The madness of exporting knowledge to your competitors has destroyed our industrial sector and then just to make sure the lid was truly screwed down..allowing what's left to be bought up by them as well. I may as well say it (although it's already to late) because the politicians always do .."lessons have to be learnt".. Also there's probably been more Turkish barbers come here than Doctors since COVID...along with equally highly skilled nail bar technicians, car wash operatives and deliveroo peddlers... All essential workers for the " Thriving" British economy.

Indeed Blair lit the touch paper with his "Education, Education, Education" mantra. Getting rid of the "Elitism" by having everybody getting a degree in Golf course maintenance or Black Awareness Studies would level the playing field. Whilst the Tories making students pay for their degree possibly pushed the goalposts further up that playing field, was in my opinion fair..why should those that didn't go to university pay for the privilege of those that do. But then of course we quickly found ourselves with a shortage of skilled tradesmen ( sorry tradespeople) so we open the borders to the "one legged" roofers we were desperately short of. Unlike other EU Countries there was no cap on the numbers when free movement was introduced. And now when it's 700k per annum after the promises to reduce it to the tens of thousands the inevitable apology.. " We got it wrong...sorryyyy"

When Sunak visited India he was told by the Indian PM they wanted more access for Indians to work and study in the UK. I wonder why Rishi didn't say No...🤔

@petertaysum8947 - thanks for reminding me.. of course the cut backs to local authority arts funding due to stringent Austerity measures had a terrible effect on the zither and accordion players of the UK.. luckily many East Europeans players from Romania, Albania and Bulgaria answered the call to fill the musical void, and now along with their big issue selling wives and daughters funding them, they're able to entertain us in our city centres.. especially at this time of year when we cheer on the Queers for Palestine marchers during the festive season .

@fergusdenoon1255 -No, it's become a falsely created industry based on extolling knowledge that at one time was for the benefit of British science, engineering, commerce and industry. We are now simply "exporting" that knowledge to our competitors who will and are using it against us. Our Steel works are closing down because we want to reach net zero ahead of everyone else..just last week Vauxhall said it's closing it's Luton plant because of it. What replaces those lost jobs ! The products will be quickly replaced by imports from China made without the hindrance of Govt "green energy" ideology. They now have the expertise to produce hi tec goods .. they're even building our new Nuclear Power stations !..which was a technology Britain once led the world in. So all those economic advantages to local communities you mention will go the same way as the former industrial towns left behind by "progress ".
