  2. The inadvertent actions of a young, 22-year-old inexperienced George Washington actually started the French and Indian War! Washington, a Lt. Col. of the Virginia Regiment but who had no real military experience, attacked a French encampment in southwestern Pennsylvania on May 28, 1754. Most historians agree that was the first spark of the larger conflict that lasted nine years!

However - Because the Iroquois nations have been peaceful for 200 years, looking back today you get more of a romantic version of the native peoples who could be ruthless with each other in war - and against white settlers - esp. the Senecas, the most feared of the six Iroquois nations! George Washington sent an army of 5,000 men - a huge army at the time - to destroy the Senecas after they murdered and tortured innocent women and children at the Cherry Valley Masacre! The 1779 Sullivan Expedition wiped out the Senecas' villages, food supplies and essentially ended their threat to the frontier! Only two of the Iroquois nations sided with the colonists. The others were punished for siding with the British! The atrocities were so outrageous that Gen. Washington brought the hammer down at great expense to the Colonial Army! Read about the Cherry Vallery Massacre in central New York on November 11, 1778. It will give you a different opinion of the Native Americans!
