Same here, i prefer the lever, you know when it's in or out, and if you need to roll a bit to engage / disengage. It annoys me when i go to pull onto a dry road after using 4wd, and find out mid turn 4wd is still engaged till the driveline is slack enough. You know for sure when you are using the lever.

If it happens when you put it in drive (or reverse) it's slack in the driveline... It isn't 100% tight so you get a slight clunk or click, even on very new RWD based vehicles. I assume that's your clunk since the truck is so new, other clunks would involve worn bushings and loose bolts that you don't find in new vehicles, and they make a pretty good clunk that feels like someone bumped you gently.
