Yeah, I'd rather go out and find a similar southern car and put money into that than keep a rust bucket going.
I got my dad's old rusty 01 tundra and I loved it because it was a manual, and it was basic (crank windows). I put my own time into it fixing things for cheap (2 brake lines rusted out, exhaust rusted out, parking brake cable snapped, patched multiple rust holes in the oil pan and rear diff) I got an extra 80k more miles out of it for roughly $800 in parts and many hours of my own time before the power steering rack started leaking like mad and I said that's enough, and drove with the res empty till I dumped it. Just about every problem was caused by rust, and there was so much more to come. It was just too rusty to keep going, as much as I loved it.
If it was a beautiful southern truck I'd still have it, even with it's 300k miles, but rust is a different story.
