The library of Alexandria, the loss of our ability to make Roman concrete until VERY recently, our inability to make Greek fire, and the delisting of computer games demonstrate that the loss of knowledge is absolutely something that is worth considering. That's why it is soo important to keep hard copies or multiple backups of everything that's important to you.

@TheDrumstickEmpire 🤣🤣🤣 It was the single largest repository of knowledge on the planet in an age when there were not a lot of knowledge repositories. And of COURSE we have lost more planet wide in 2000 years than in that single loss, but it was still heartbreaking. Like losing everything on the internet at once.

@coodudeman I never said I tolerated it. Even a deterministic brain needs programming with consequences. Your decision to "require better from yourself" is simply a deterministic trait that is a combination of programming and biology.

@shaolinshadowslap Today's elitist is tomorrow's commonplace.

🥰 Given the inability of some former presidents to regulate their behaviour, I TOTALLY understand a child acting on auto, even with quite complex issues. That's why I have a lot of empathy for children who misbehave. Less so for people in their 70s...

@MartinFinnerup Agree 100%

Yeah, but where does the DECISION to change those negative thought patterns come from? It's all unconscious in the end.

Why are you taking such pleasure in discussing brutal murder? It's fascinating, but hardly a subject for smiles and happiness.
1
@coodudeman I'm not remotely jealous. Grow up.

Most of the world is ignorant about America so their opinions are irrelevant, but i can assure you that nowadays the educated world views you with utter utter contempt. Frankly America needs erasing and starting again. It's terminally damaged by its history, it's culture and its political system.

The guy who wrote that book and runs the Canam Missing project is borderline insane. There's no theory too crazy for him. Aliens almost seem to be his baseline assumption, and I've seen him misrepresenting the truth many times. He spreads almost as much nonsense as the church.

Does it help you if we call it a "planet?"

@iepineapple Very interesting. Agree 100% on the library.

You're talking about tech, in English, [puts on valley girl voice] you're like soooo predictable!

If you were going to send a message to your creations, wouldn't you do it with something more unequivocal than an event that the majority of them would never live or be positioned to see, the mathematical significance of which most would not understand, and even the smart ones would not have the technology to understand until 100,000 years into their existence? Also, given the infinite number things that could be amazing, it just so happens that this one is really visible, but I'm sure that even in a random universe there would be millions more coincidences happening simultaneously.
1
Both are inevitable though, so it's possible that there would be a technological leap.

It reminds me of the "Degrees of wikipedia" thing where you're never more than 5 links away from a certain type of content.

The really sad thing is, he realised that the best way to be truly happy was to stay the fuck away from people as much as possible, but the second he forgot that, society punished him for it repeatedly.

No scientists of note believe we're living in a simulation. It's just an intellectual exercise. Your claim that we're created is nothing but an unsubstantiated flat assertion.

I find the fact that people hundreds of thousands of years ago loved and got horny about their friends and family members deeply moving. The idea that they memorialised those who had died is especially poignant. Maybe Venus of Brassemouy was a man's daughter and it just made his heart ache with love to spend any time apart from her.
