No, but they don't belong to you either. They're just on loan from themselves, and you have a duty to protect and nurture them, and prepare them for their adult lives.

@whousa642 "what is bad parenting? According to whom? " I'm sorry, but there are socially agreed upon standards that represent bad parenting. Failing to clothe of feed your child, constantly exposing them to danger or negative influences, failing to educate them. These are all uneuivocally bad by the standards of our society, and if you contravene these, I would not hesitate for a second to recommend that the goverment take your children from you. The raising of children is EVERYONE'S business, because everyone pays the price if it is done very badly, either emotionally or socially. Also, parents do NOT have total control over their children's lives. Try beating them in public or denying them an ediucation or taking them to a bar.

@whousa642 It's not contradictory at all. I said "there are socially agreed upon standards that represent bad parenting." "Good parenting" is not an objective standard - it's culturally subjective. You live in a western culture, which has moderately high standards for what would constitute good parenting. "socially accepted" is not a global standard - it is regional. "Got to think above kindergarten level." Was that necessary?
