You don't negotiate with vermin, you annihilate them. The longest war in US history was half-assed from the start. If it had been approached with the same resolution of purpose and vigour as Iraq, maybe the Taliban would have been destroyed, or at least fearful to ever show their faces again, just like the Republican Guard in Iraq. Don't interfere in other country's wars if you are not willing to pursue your action to the end.

@mochalo4912 No, not BUSHES! Well that's the biggest military on the planet screwed. ;-)

@ericdpeerik3928 Well said, but it's all about profit for the industrial military complex, not about what serves the interests of the US citizens.

@mochalo4912 No. No comparison. Vietnam was JUNGLE warfare, not "bushes," and the US military was a VERY different beast back then. Drones were not a thing for starters. Also, jungle is essentially a blanket that hides everything in and beneath. AND then there were tunnels. And the Vietnamese were receiving outside help. And they were able to cross the border into Cambodia to escape. And satellites were not a thing. The near polar opposite of desert warfare. I'll grant that Afghanistan has mountains, and may have caves, but I don't think that you cvan draw inferences on the difficulty of one conflict from the other.

@wasser5686 You may be right. It is considered unconquerable, but ANYWHERE can be conquered with sufficient commitment and lack of consideration for the consequences.

@wasser5686 I think you're being naive. The US barely gives a damn about the Geneva convention. In fact, it has specifically refused to be a participant in the European court of human rights because it refuses to have its troops judged by members of other nations. The US spends more on the military than the next 10 countries combined. Notwithstanding its ineptitude, it is not living in fear of reprisals from the rest of the world. It could leave any other nation on earth a radioactive pile of rubble and is isane enough to think like that. Jesus, they just had a president who asked why they don't nuke Syria FFS! And Nixon almost launched the nukes also.

@wasser5686 I'm not familiar with the warcrimes you mention, but they don't come as a surprise. Psychological studies have shown that it's very hard to make soldiers kill other innocent soldiers - they have a natural streak of decency that inhibits them. Thus, governments demonise the enemy. Unfortunately, once you remove the humanity from your soldiers, it's not easy to recontain that genie on a whim.
