Drivers make 8% above the national average salary. Perhaps they deserve it due to the long hours and being away from home, but they're certainly not desperately underpaid.

@richardoshea7133 Yes, I agree, I did reduce it to a false dichtomy, and I thought that as I typed it, but I also considered corporations answerable to shareholders who see a certain profit floor as their absolute right.

@richardoshea7133 The job creator myth was disproven decades ago. They just hoard the wealth and don't support the economy.

@richardoshea7133 I think robotisation and automation are an unstoppable inevitability. All the massive employers are looking at ways to take employees out of the loop. I don't blame them. Humans are unreliable, costly, argumentative, have rights, sick days, holidays, babies, and more. Why wouldn't you want to replace that with programming and power costs? Companies have no obligation towards human beings per se, and when profit and competitiveness are your sole motivations, why should they care about the human cost? I'm actually genuinely interested about an economy where nobody has jobs any more. If you could look forwards 200 years would it be a Star Trek world where everybody lives for free, able to pursue their own interests, or will everyone be compulsory food for the machine?

@richardoshea7133 The problem is not food AMOUNT, it's food sharing. There is more than enough food for the planet if it was evenly distributed. As for population - the problem of the next age will be population decline not growth. As countries become better educated, birth rates rates reverse, and eventually there will be too few people to support the previous generations, which is why China has not only reversed its one child policy, but is now actively REWARDING more children.

@richardoshea7133 The utilisation and distribution of resources has ALWAYS been a problem. What is the Biblical story of Joseph and the Paraoh about if not food distribution? The fact that California - a state with extremely limited water resources, is pissing away 1.1 gallons of water to grow a single almond is a classic example of mismanaged resources, and one that I anticipate coming to a hard stop as things become more dire in that state. But let's be honest, that's a stark example of the wealthy taking more than their share - the distillation of the problem in a... ahem, nutshell.

@Land-of-reason Yeah, keep the workers ignorant and easy to control! And why is a degree "false hope?" If you're smart enough to be accepted to a university, the hope is not false. Moreover, blue and white collar jobs are the ones most likely to survive the move towards automation.

@Land-of-reason I agree with you 100%, but a vast number of people are neither capable, nor interested in becoming doctors or scientists. I have great appreciation for the street sweepers, checkout staff, postmen and lorry drivers in society, but let's not set a ceiling on the opportunities we give to young people simply because we require a menial class. As I already mentioned, THEY are the jobs that will be the first to go in the inevitable move towards a fully automated society. That said, I am passionately against convincing every child that university and the ensuing debt slavery that accompanies it, is the best choice for them. University is in part an extension of the system that teaches conformity and the preparation of well behaved social drones who feed the system.

@kukulroukul4698 Being hard working is not a qualification. Ask a nurse if her 2 years of college, 3 of university, 4 years of 60 hour weeks and £30k of debt, is the same as a checkout girl who works hard for 35 hours a week!
