This is the kind of moronic bargaining by our nations. We are dealing with a hostile nation, and we wanted terms that left us the flexibility to simply walk away if we saw a better deal. Now things have gone the opposite direction and we're whining that they are doing business in exactly the same dispassionate way as we did. There is no loyalty in either direction, nor would any sane person expect there to be.

@LeMerch Absolute, total nonsense. Control over fuel is one of the defining factors of a ground war. But even putting war aside, Russia is not our friend. They owe us NOTHING. Our own power suppliers raise prices during shortage but you don't think a virtual enemy like Russia should? A laughable proposition.

@fed up Yes, that's an excellent point. On some occasions, citizen pressure has lead to a change in government, and on others, such as Cuba, the citizens simply pay the price, much as they do with import tarrifs.

@Kraska93 When it was saved from annihilation in WW2? When the cold war ended? Every day that it is not globally ostracised and sanctioned for its spying, murders on our soil, and industrial espionage. I'd say the west has been EXCEEDINGLY reasonable given the circumstances.

"Literally everything you said can be applied to western nations as well." Please tell me which citizens we have killed on Russian streets? Please tell me what explosives we have detonated in Russia? Tell me which power plants have been sabotaged and which businesses in Russia have been sabotaged by Westerns actors. Tell me what satellites we have shot down at the risk of all orbital objects? @Kraska93 Again, it is YOU who is completely missing the point. "The west" is not, nor ever WAS a monolith. It has always comprised over a dozen nations, each with their own bloody history and aspirations. And before you get too pompous about the history of the west, let's not forget Russia's OWN bloody history of imperialism. I don't blame you for that, any more than I take personal responsibility for Britain's appalling colonial past, much less taht of the entire "West." By NO MEANS do I forget the massive loss of Russian lives during WW2, but Russia was fighting for its survival, and many of those lives were not at the end of guns, rather they were civilian casualties. "The west may not have voted for it but they sure made sure the H boy got as strong as possible and even collaborated with him." I've not read such a pile of nonsense under the guise of "analysis" since I read holocaust denial. Yes, Vichy France collaborated to save itself, and yes, Italy under Musollini joined the Germans, but one and a half nations are not "The west." You raised issue that I was not considering the 20 million Russian lives lost - what about the 41 million additional allied lives? Then you s**t on their memory with that BS. We're done here. @MultiMatrosik I agree with the premise that hope is an ineffective strategy. I think Putin would be WILDLY foolish to push America too far. It's the most overly jingoistic nation on the planet, and its population are so foolishly deluded on on the idea of America exceptionalism that at least half would gladly die to prevent Russia defeating them. Putin is a cunning strategist - he mostly tries to move behind the scenes, but ultimately, his death in a nuclear conflagration is not part of his thinking. That's the massive difference beween America and Russia, and Putin knows it. His thinking is to undermine the west and drive it crazy from within. Why would he ever go head to head on the battlefield. As for America having no strategy, Edward Snowden, trillions in defence spending, military bases the world over, and control of middle east oil would suggest otherwise.

@MultiMatrosik I enjoyed your analysis and generally agree with what you just wrote but your final question is the one that most concerns me - "HOW MANY military conflicts began contrary to logic." I trust Putin not start a nuclear war because he is not interested in military dominance - he is interested in wealth, power and to a much lesser extent ego. With America, Trump is ALL ego and no strategy, as are many other Trump wannabes. I 100% think that they would happily start a nuclear war over ego - after all, Trump murdered half a million of his own citizens indirectly because he didn't want to look bad over covid! I will just disagree with you on one other major issue - America has already launched nukes in anger twice, so it has a proven willingness to do so. It sees the murder of hundreds of thousands of people as a reasonable tactical step to achieve its objectives. Never underestimate that nation's utter moral bankrupcy.

@MultiMatrosik If America made agreements with Russia and there is no reason not to follow through on those agreements, then OF course America should stick to its end. If Moscow is interfering in US elections (and it seems fairly certain it did to some extent, even if that was "only" social media disinformation), then that would count as an attack on sovereign nation, and all agreements are suspended until civil relations are resumed. For what possible reason would America go along with Moscow's wishes if Moscow acts as an enemy power? Yes, Moscow interfered IS a trump card, but it doesn't make it untrue. I would LOVE to see America and Russia and China and Europe as close friends.China is socially too alien for that to happen unless true democracy is restored, America seems to be a failing democracy, Europe seems moderately strong in terms of democracy, if not cohesion. Russia appears to be culturally not dissimilar to Europe in many ways, so who knows, but as long as demagogue leaders rule America, Russia and China, I don't see much hope. If the world could take the ego and greed out of politics then things could move forwards.

Darth Vader's Dad I don't suck up to Labour. Labour is a shitshow of a party that long ago forgot that it was supposed to be the working man's party. I had some hope with Corbyn - I expected him to be politically clueless but morally grounded, but of course, the hidden money powers orchestrated his downfall because someone who cares about the working man can never be permitted to rise to power. As for Europe, calling it the 4th Reich is an overreaction. The EU had many great ideas, but too much bureaucracy and overstepped its mandate becoming too dictatorial. I still think the intent to draw us together into something greater than we were individually was excellent in world of superpowers. Now Britain stands alone as a minnow in shark-infested waters.

@anomanderrake96 Russia is an aggressive dictatorship with a large nuclear arsenal. On at least one occasion, the only reason they didn't start a nuclear ware was because of a single disobedient submarine captain. Russia has invaded its neighbours, constantly sabotages western democracies, and by wilful inaction allows Russian actors to put western lives at risk. Russia invades the UK every single day in cyber space and with agents.

I don't blame the average Russian person for Russia's conflict with the west, I blame Russiann leadership and Russian cyber actors. Is that really a compicated concept for you to comprehend?
