Freedom is not a buffet. If you are genuinely fleeing persecution, stop in the first western nation you reach, not the one with the most exploitable welfare system. We're told it's a sign of their desperation that they risk their lives like this, but I think it's more like the Squid game where they risk all because the rewards are worth it. The loss of life is terrible, but these were criminals attempting to subvert the legal process of asylum in oder to take advantage of Britain's over generosity. Britain needs to shoulder its share of the cost to France in keeping these people off the boats in the first place, but if these criminals choose to ignore the law and pay the highest price, I'm not going lay awake at night racked with guilt. Perhaps their deaths will serve as a cautionary tale. And can someone PLEASE start executing the traffickers?
