Assange ceased to get my respect when he became a partisan politiiical actor and helped empower Trump, leading to a new age of darkness in US politics, setting a templated copied by despots across the planet. He forgot the primary journalistic creed - don't choose sides, just report the news. As soon as he became a political actor, he rightly lost the protections afforded as a journalist.
