The long-term issue should not be WHERE we dump, but that everything is made with short term, built-in obsolescence simply to maintain corporate profits. I am surprised though - I would not have thought it that easy OR financial viable to sneak entire containers of low value waste out to Romania.

We're NOT dumping our waste on them. Unscrupulous waste sites are being PAID to accept it. This is down to Romania.

That's an unreasonable burden. I agree that products should be recyclable or biodegradable, but proper disposal should surely fall to the purchaser or the local authority?

But they ARE cleaning it up. Theyre paying someone to take it away. What else can they do?

@cyraxx604 Then why did you misuse it? A get rich quick scam is one offered to a gullible person to con money out of them wit the promise of a fast return on their investment. In this case, both parties were fully aware of what they were getting into, and there's no indication that either side got particularly rich, so in what way is it a get rich quick scam? Where was the scam? And it's "get rich SCHEME" and "wally." Just saying ;-)

@geoffreycharles6330 Don't know why you're bringing race into it. It's almost like you don't have a compelling argument so you throw down what you assume will be your trump card. Wrong. It simply makes you look foolish. Illegal disposal of waste material is a universal ill, perpetrated in every country of the world - it has NOTHING to do with race or imperialism.

@Cero Balam You're mistaken Cero. The worst waste dumpers on the planet, and those that put the most waste into the oceans are third world nations where communities are too poor to have formal waste collection at all. Big countries may be able to afford to ship their waste hundreds of miles to other nations for disposal, but poor nations simply dump it on their own doorsteps, where it finds its way into EVERYBODY'S ecosystems. I'm afraid Cero, that the problem is simply the vast amount of waste that the human race is generating. We need to move away from disposable lifestyles and packaging.

@cyraxx604 Nope, still not a get rich quick scheme. Where's the scam? BOTH parties knew precisely what they were doing and knew they were breaking the law. The sender determined that by labelling rubbish as "clothes", they could circumvent regulations preventing the shipping of rubbish to Romania, and the receiver knew that he was breakig the law by discarding UK waste in a Romanian landfill. It was not about getting rich quick, but about saving the routine cost of proper disposal in the UK. What surprises me, is that it's less expensive to ship UK waste all the way to Romania, than it is to simply dump in UK landfills.

@alkdjfhgks1919 Yes, I noticed taht. I don't believe in white victimhood narratives, but nor do I believe that all whites are responsible for the ills in America. The "Jews will not replace us" mob are an appalling example of American manhood, but the idea that ALL whites are guilty by virtue of skin colour is pathetic. When it comes to issues such as reparation, for America's slave-owning past or Britain's colonial past, it's more complicated. I DO think Britain should return all the national treasures it looted, but I do NOT think that white America should pay reparations, which amounts to stealing from groups who were not responsible, to give to another who were never personally victims. That said, the American right in politics contines to push racial division, and disempower ethnic minorities for petty political gain. America is not in a good place ATM.

@parameshnat The trouble with second hand, is it comes with no warranty, which is a total no no for electronics and computer hardware. I'd take the chance with things like furniture or clothes, but as you say, even tracking this stuff DOWN is problematic.

@zeemo7751 It's like burning coal or wood fires, or petrol cars, or even lead in household paint - for decades or centuries nobody realised how bad it was - we all just saw cheap, and companies just saw disposable items that would need constant repurchasing. We need to see manufacturing with new eyes. I'd love durability to be a primary criterion, as recyclability has been increasing becoming.
