I wonder though, if there are possibly just as many male presenters who have done similar things to get the job?

Equality of opportunity not equality of outcome Tony. That said, the BBC is in a unique position because there is no correlation between the popularity of its presenters and its revenue. When you are sheltered like this, perhaps there really is no reason for any gender disparity, except just maybe, the willingness of its presenters to put in the hours. The one thing I do know, is if I am paying for these presenters, under threat of jail, there's no presenter that I think merits a half million pound per year salary let alone the obscene amounts Lineker and Evans are on.

Well, it has been suggested that one reason that women may earn a little less than men is that their negotiating skills are not as good, which jibes abstractly with what you're saying. But frankly, I have great respect for people who are willing to claw their way in from the absolute bottom so it's all a matter of perspective. A wonderful woman I once was very close to earned three degrees which she paid for by cleaning lavatories. She went on to become chief architect at a major property developers. I have massive respect for her dedication to her goals.

Presumably people work for the BBC for free because they lack the resume to be paid. They work free as a way of saying "I have confidence in myself - let me prove my worth." I think it's a reasonable way of forcing your foot into a door that would otherwise never be opened for you. Clearly if women choose children over career then they are not in the workplace as long and do not deserve equal pay.
