It always seems that disasters like this come down to some construction company trying to save a little bit of money. Somewhere a CEO is nervously considering his prospects.

@TheHumanGerm If the structure is somewhere that has regular earthquakes, then it would need to be built to withstand that.

@ODiEdiTzZ Yeah, it's sickening. Do you remember that scandal in your industry where they discovered that the Chinese were producing cheap knockoff parts for planes? Shocking.

@micknotfromleitrim Capitalism is like a bayonet - it can be used for good or bad but its fundamental design encourges bad. A small business offering a product or sevice for sale is good. When companies become corporations, with shareholders, it inevitably leads to great bad.

@RnBReworked No, not at all. California has thousands of earthquake resistant buildings, most of which can withstand severe earthquakes. There are many ways to do so - changing the foundations, placing buildings on vibration damping bases, not going tall, using frames and fabrication that sways and bends, avoiding structures that produce harmonic resonance when shaken, and more. The science is quite interesting.

@ODiEdiTzZ I agree totally. You would think that buying 747 parts would only be allowed direct from Boeing.

@sonnyburgess2510 China certainly has a cavalier attitide towards the environment, but it is still doing far more than the US on climate change.

@RnBReworked My pleasure.

@Mr_Sh1tcoin Experience shows that disasters of new structures are 99% the fault of a construction company trying to save money either on materials or design or design verification, and older structures are down to people with maintenance responsibility trying to save money. When you think about it, they really are the two primary options. No, I'm not an engineer, but I've seen hundreds of these cases. May I ask what YOUR expertise is?

Gregory Vincent The trouble is, city planners work to the lowest budget, not the most competent builders. As you point out, building to tight time scales is another dangerous issue.

@jaimec2783 Hmmm, not looking good.

@Mr_Sh1tcoin You really are quite invested in disproving this huh? But no, without knowing anything about my sources of information, you go on a silly rant. I suggest you interrogate your own emotions on this matter. I'm done with you.

@gregsteele4914 Absolutely right Greg.

@sebastianguerre6868 Ahh yes, now you mention it, I've heard of such practices before.
1
@arither And as usual, it is innocent people who suffer.
1
@arither I don't envy anyone who has to, but maybe after this they'll get the attention they appear to need. It seems that poor infrastructure maintenance is a trueism across the whole planet.

Harun Musa You're creating a connection where none exists. And it was TRUMP who had a large amount of his manufacturing made in China, including the steel in many of his buildings.

@nadiacusan3799 Certainly organised crime seems to play a part in the construction industry in America. I don't know if the mafia even EXISTS in Mexico, but organised crime sure does.
1
@Mr_Sh1tcoin No I don't, and I didn't here. Have a nice day.
