I wondered that, but nevertheless, whatever Adam's motivation, the life afforded Derek as a result of the man's involvement seems far more fulfilling than it otherwise would have been, and that's all that really matters. Given that Adam was very careful to refer to this severely autistic person in such that he was talking for him, rather than merely about him, suggests to me that maybe he cares more than you may fear.
