No.one coud not. A recent Ted talk on mental illness in the 3rd world demonstrated that rising mental illness (or rising awareness of it) is a universal problem, not simply one restricted to capitalist societies.

Good point John.I was just thinking to myself that her ideas needed more substantiation. that being said, her whole point was that ancient man had an instant relief for stress: you run, you fight, whatever. But I would have liked to hear precisely what these harmful "stress chemicals" are that build up and drive us nuts.

I can't help but wonder if EVERYBODY suffers from some level of mental incapacity at some point in their lives, but only when it becomes long-lived that it gets a diagnosis. I can't help but feeling that the greatest reason it is ignored, is that we are all a little scared of losing our minds, and on innate level, we all recognise how fragile our grip on sanity is. If we don't talk about it, it isn't real.

But again, the point she makes, is that it's not the stress that is causing the harm, but the lack of an escape mechanism. Although that sounds initially seductive - what about soldiers under stress who get to kill the enemy to relieve it, yet still suffer all kinds of traumas? This talk needed a lot more evidence to be taken as anything more than te personal opinon of an annoying woman.
