It's ALWAYS about money somewhere.

I genuinely do have sympathy for the gas company in this situation, after all, they couldn't be expected to account for chemical reactions with someone else's pipework. However, I absolutely blame whoever authorised a gasoline pipeline under a city, and I absolutely blame the firechief who wilfully mislead the citizens for what? Convenience?

@c0c0asauce I don't think that they should be expected to consider the misinstallation of other people's pipelines.

@c0c0asauce Not quite sure how you would inspect the full length of an underground, gasoline filled pipeline weekly?

@c0c0asauce They DID smell gas and immediately launched an investigation. But what if that gasoline was simply seeping into the ground 6 feet down rather than into the sewers? There might never have been an outwards sign. It seems to me that sniffing for gasoline is a very imprecise and imperfect solution. I thought you might know of something a bit more dependable.

@c0c0asauce That's a fair question but if the leak occurred over months, perhaps the pressure drop was imperceptible?

@c0c0asauce Yes, I understood what you were saying, but what if the pipe is pushing ten thousand gallons a minute, and the margin of error for measurment is +/- 1% - that's still a lot of misplaced fuel over 3 months.
