This is such a TOTAL no-brainer. We keep building smarter machines, and giving them more and more control over our lives. They already make life and death decisions daily, it seems like only a matter of time before these machines are making decisions on morality and legality, and when they become judge jury and executioner, we could be screwed - or greatly enhanced. Just imagine the judiciary or government without prejudice, bigotry or emotional bias.

Faladrin Not only is that not true, but even if it was, it's literally no different to the human brain's processing, which is nothing more than stimulus response, running the program of your experience, with perhaps a small pseudo random factor throw in for your DNA. Nevertheless, computers are capable not only of programming themselves, but also of coming up with entirely new and unpredictable responses to changing conditions. I think that your comment about designing systems with fail-safes is breathtakingly optimistic. Hubble telescope cost 2.5 billion to build yet was launched with a terminal flaw. Two Galileo satellites costing 13 billion were both sent into the wrong orbits by programming errors, and it is reputed that one multi-billion satellite was sent off into deep space by a programming error. That's to say nothing of the recent discovery of the heartbleed bug in SSL security - the security underpinning the globe's financial transactions. If the history of programming has shown us ANYTHING it's that even the most VITAL programs are botched with a high degree of regularity. And that's when they DON'T have to interoperate!
