A tediously tree-hugging way to deal with death, but I suppose no more ridiculous than anything else we do with bodies. I have no problem with the basic concept, but the whole taking a cup of grampa home to spread on the garden just strikes me as pretty stupid. The last thing we need, is ways to ritualise death even more.

Lewa500 I'm aware that the over-ritualization of death prolongs the pain rather reduces it. I'm aware that beliefs that grampa is somehow "still with you" because you spread his mulch on your roses are just self deception. I'm aware that we should spend more effort on living well and treating the minds and bodies of the living.

Lewa500 In the sense that memory enables us to build upon the experience of the past, yes, I am aware of that, but if you are suggest that memory of passed love ones is a necessary coping mechanism, then I disagree. Quite the opposite. The sooner we can let go of their passing, the sooner we are empowered to deal with the present and future. We each shape our own existence by the way that we relate to past, present and future. To create symbolic shrines to the past can be extremely unhealthy, just as it can be unhealthy to deny the natural rhythms of life and death. I would prefer that we taught a better understanding of the briefness of existence, so that we do more with the here and now.

***** I'm not arguing FOR cemeteries , I'm arguing against any form of ritualisaton. But all of your points are perfectly reasonable. Except the ignorant one.

Booster Gold Yes, that's a nice way of thinking of it. I'm in favour.
