Fante247 Explain why the principle is different. We are capable of space flight now, and have already started exploring other planets, yet we're more warlike than ever. Tell me what great leap of diplomacy and maturity you expect of a species that invents an interstellar engine.

avedic "You're being kinda anthropocentric to assume they'd be just like us." Not at all, the majority of animals on this planet are competitive, aggressive, murderous and/or tribal. It's a truism that in any environment where there is competition for mates, food or territory, these traits develop. Moreover, EVERY environment has at least one of these pressures, and there is no reason to assume that an alien environment would be any different. Why would they have had to survive their civilizational immaturity. That immaturity could be the PRECSE REASON why they're in space. Moreover, we theoretically have the capacity to reach other stars in generational ships right now, and we have clearly not overcome that immaturity.

What a wonderfully optimistic, but somewhat naïve perspective. For a start you assume that aliens even have a sense of value, let alone morality. You also assume that human life would be considered valuable, and not, as happened in The day the earth stood still, as a virus to be eradicated to save the rest of the planet. You also assume that this society has evolved differently to earth, and that the acquisition of resources is not their primary goal. You also assume that humans might not be considered a threat and eliminated out of fear.

Corey Wiley DNA? Perhaps if they were cosmic travellers, they wouldn't come to Earth to get resources not available elsewhere, but earth could be a staging post on the way through. Just as gasoline is widely available, nevertheless, sometimes you stop at gas stations far from your home for a refill.

frostwork_bouquet The trouble is, if you look at the universe, and societies, or animal communities, they do not tend towards harmony, and any harmony that exists only seems to be a brief respite in the relentlessly warlike nature of existence. Perhaps it is inevitably going to be so in community that has evolved in an environment of competition for food or a mate? Moreover, a single aggressive race can mean the destruction of hundreds of evolved, non aggressive ones - witness the Romans, the rise of Islam, the British Empire, etc. Are you aware that many in the scientific community have started to posit that it is not the search for extra terrestrial LIFE that we should be engaging in, but the search for extra terrestrial self destruction. It is not weak radio signals that we should hope for, but the signs of global destruction. But for all of that, I would like to share your optimistic, Star Trek positivity, in which the ability to travel inter stellar means that a species has matured beyond petty bickering. Just remember, even the Vulcan homeworld just got wiped out. All the good their peace did them! ;-)
