The issue is not about promoting freedom for atheists, but about promoting values of mutual tolerance and freedom on ALL issues, so that the general population sees all points of view as deserving toleration. Gay rights in the US have only been  allowed to flourish in the US as a result of a more general civil rights movement, starting with female equality, and progressing to racial equality.
