This is exactly how modern corporations would treat everyone if they could still get away with it. They are ruthless, reckless, and utterly without morals. Bravo on the insurance company for being uncharacteristically decent and paying out.

@apocratos0174 The conversation is far more nuanced than that, but companies that have a fiscal responsibility to return profit to shareholders, are structurally designed to behave in a way that is parasitic, deleterious to employees, and bad for society at large. As for socialism, when you're spending other people's money - taken under force of law, accountability is low, bureaucracy, waste and corruption are high. But they are polar extremes, not the only choices. But I'm sure that you already considered all that?

@VR-gs9hd I agree with your comment about gratitude. I disagree with your contempt for the modern generation. I think that they are facing constant assaults on their emotional well--being. Just look at the rise of stress related suicide and heart attacks. Much as I am empathetic of those who grew up during wars, or before medicine, I think each era comes with its own challenges.

@dan3nad That's not true. Corporations have an unsustainable drive to create endlessly increasing profits. There's nothing wrong with commerce so long as it is equitable. In the past, people made things or offered services, add a fair profit markup over costs and that was enough. Nowadays, enough is never enough.

@EarthIsNotFlat Before the era of the stock market, the business model was to calculate the cost of production, add a profit margin, and that was the price you charged. Where's the evidence? The fact that houses are no longer affordable. The fact that the past world did not exist in a state of constant financial crisis. The fact that profit was not designed to feed shareholders who required never ending growth. The fact that the world was full of small businesses, not a few mega corps who own 99% of all manufacturing. What if you've captured the entire market? What if there is simply no choice because you work in a rarified market such as drug manufacture? What if you are constrain by urgency or proximity in your choices? And that's to say nothing of companies who buy the politicians to artificially limit your choices, such as drugs in America. As for your comment about souls, being deliberately obtuse doesn't improve your argument.

@EarthIsNotFlat That is ABSOLUTELY not true. Human commerce operated on a non parasitic basis for millennia. Also, people have compassion and an awareness of the future - corporations do not.

@EarthIsNotFlat I do not compare my standard of living against that of the entirety of history, and regardless of when you live, being exploited is still being exploited. In the UK, housing prices are fine in places where people don't want to live - far from population centres, amenities, public transport, etc. I don't know to what extent immigration is a factor - for a chunk of the recent decades in Britain, more people emigrated than immigrated. Placing national restrictions on where councils can build, and preventing them from using the money raised from right to buy sales has not helped. In our cities, as with America, vast amounts of property is either owned by the mega wealthy, or by investors buying houses purely for profit. Sadly, the very people enforcing the rules, are directly or indirectly associated with the very monied interests that you refer to in your second paragraph. Wolves farming the sheep.

@AK-74K I'm not convinced that they will. Most workers are attached to the location where they work and live, and especially in specialist jobs, there are not thousands of alternate vacancies. If it was that easy, why do miners get so angry about pit closures?
