The EU did NOT stop river dredging in cases where it was needed for flood management. This incompetence rests solely on local council management. And what has also gone wrong is climate change.

@nicholeparrish5253 They clearly don't or all the millions of people who prayed not to be killed would still be alive. In double blind studies, it is proven that prayer actually makes things worse.

Exactly! A friend of mine moved in 6 months ago. She told me iher new 350k house is right by a river. I asked if she was concerned about floods. "Nah, it only does it every 50 years". Yeah, that was whe we weren't destroying the climate. And now I'm supposed to feel sorry for her, or see my insurance raise to help her. Stupid woman.

@mccari09 You could't be more wrong. Galileo was imprisoned for going against Catholic orthodoxy, NOT simply for arguing against claims of geo-centrism. Moreover, the fact that there was consensus in an age before the scientific method is tribute only to how far bad ideas can spread without widespread dissemination of competing ideas, a method for examining claims, and the untellectual freedom to do so. How many things can you point to that had the support of a literate scientific majority, that turned out to be wrong? And was it not the scientific method that disproved them, that gives us greater faith in widespread consensus? We can point to LOTS of things that had the support of some, even many scientists, that may not be what they appeared to be - black holes, the expansion rate of the universe, and dark matterto name but three. But ALL scientists recognised them purely as placeholder theories. Climate scientists have a consensus because the effects of different gases on the atmosphere can be measured and predicted, and their effects on solar radiation trapping or release and other planetary phenomenon can also be predicted, and these predictions are broadly consistent with reality. Unless you have a superior way for evaluating reality, it seems foolhardy or arrogant to dismiss them.

Clearly most of the commenters below don't have the slightest clue how insurance works. INSURANCE IS A BUSINESS NOT AS CHARITY.. If you crash your car, your insurance goes up because you are a greater risk. If you keep crashing your car, nobody will insure you and your driving days are over for a while. Likewise, if you buy a house somewhere that regularly floods, that's YOUR stupidity. It's not the responsibility of an insurer OR the rest of us via government to reimburse you. If you take the gamble and win, we don't get to share your profits, so why should we share your losses when we never got a vote on the risks?

@beaulieuc8910 I guess they didn't consider it an eirher or situation. Flooding is a short-term issue. Housing for dozens of elderly residents is an ongoing need. I'm not sure which is more important. What do you think?

Or to look at it another way: you move onto a flood plain, expect your insurance to pay out for the very thing the area is known for, and everybody ELSE'S premiums go up to cover it. I know which I think is fairer.

@flamingpieherman9822 Why SHOULD they insure you? They're not charities. If you choose to live in the path of repeated tornadoes, that risk is on YOU not all the other people being insured, and certainly not the insurance BUSINESS.

Are they vanity projects or important infrastructural projects? There's never a good time to spend tens of billions of pounds, but if you wait until you have it lying around spare, large projects will never happen. How would you spend the money to help these people?
