  1. I think it's high time taht Britain stopped honouring its colonial past. None of us agree with the nation we used to be, yet we still immortalise these butchers. How would we feel if it was statues of Hitler or Saddam or Ghadafi?

  2. +Matty Patty Statues are the highest honour any society bestows upon a person. It is a way of immortalising their accomplishments far beyond their own life, far beyond any medals or awards given to them whilst they were alive. In his time, when colonialism was rife, casual racism was the norm, and the working class accepted their lot as a sub-class in society, Rhodes may well have been seen as a worthy candidate for such an honour. Now he is not. By all means, record his life in history books, but are we really saying that one of the most honoured platforms in a senior seat of learning deserves to be occupied by a man whose views are antithetical to the values of the modern world?
