EVERYTHING Trump does is about him so why would this surprise anybody. Given that the Republicans already did away with the filibuster and were quite happy to subvert democracy with gerrymandering, and regiostration obstruction, this was always a logical step on their trajectory. The freedom of assembly has also been taken, so all the remains is the abolition of elections entirely and there you have it - the transformation from democracy to dictatorship. I only hope that the army will step up and put bullets in the heads of all traitors who support these final stages before the nation is destroyed.
