Without piracy ALL the cards are in the developers' hands. You can't take a bad game back to the store. You can't try before you buy. Even if it's bugged TF, you're stuck with it. You have no idea how long servers will be supported, or if games will continue to work on the next version of your operating system. And nowadays "early release" is being used as a business model for getting all the funds up front with none of the time pressure or obligation to ever finish a game. And absolutely worst of all (No Man's Sky), devs can blatantly lie through their teeth about functionality that doesn't even exist in the game on their promotional tour.
