  3. Most people can afford to hang onto their existing graphics cards for 2 entire card generations, especially if they already have rtx enabled cards. I hope that's what everybody will choose to do. This naked avarice does not deserve to be rewarded or validated.

  4. Upgraded to a decent CPU last year, and a new graphics card yesterday, and I'm seeing a HUGE difference. High res textures - instance responsiveness, smooth pans. I recommend building in as much headroom as possible. Buying to yourneeded minimum specs today will guarantee that you're having to rebuy every three years. My last PC was 6-7 years old, and it felt okay until I replaced it. Memory speed is the most BS lie in computing to my mind.

  6.  @dungimon1912  @Dungimon Hmmm, that's interesting. I was considering either a couple of 32" 4K monitors, or an 8K 40 inch OLED but sitting much closer. I use my PC for work as well as games, so different criteria. Refresh rate is less important than screen real estate or image quality. I had a dual xeon with a Titan x, now I have a 24 core Threadripper with an RTX 3090 and two 28 inch monitors. I needed the 3090 because I run 3D apps that use the cores for rendering, and a video app that needs the CUDA cores for AI. I also run fluid simulation software that uses the CPU cores. The fact that games runs extremely well is a bonus! :D I have played multiplayer World war Z for a while, and I didn't realise just how much I'd gotten used to a bad refresh rate. Playing it max settings on 4K wit instant was a revelation. I installed the free update of metro Exodus to the ray traced version and the game was BREATHTAKING! However, even after just one hour of play, in a huge Coolermaster tower case, the temp it raised the card to was frankly disturbing. My leg was hot a foot away, and the whole top of the case is almost too hot to touch, giving me concerns for the adjacent CPU temp. TBH, I can't game from the couch (not least because I don't have a couch ;-) ) but also, I much prefer a desk for the keyboard mouse. Dunno if that's any better/worse for my bad back, but it works for me. I tried wireless, for about 5 years, but got sick of recharging and now I have a really nice desk, with a cable management, the wires are never a problem. I recall reading that your viewing distance from a wide screen should be 1.5 times the diagonal width of the screen for it to properly fill your field of view. On a 55" inch screen, you're correct in thinking that 2.5 metres is just a touch too far away - 2.05 would be optimal. Personally, I preferred to be a touch further back (9 feet on a 52 inch screen) because it means less eye movement. Whatever works for you eh? Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you have a nice set up there. What are your top three played games at the moment? Sounds like you have a very tolerant wife letting you game on the family TV - I've seen relationships end over that! :D

  7.  @dungimon1912  I play WWZ regularly with two friends. Two of us are level 999. The other guy is maybe 250. Aftermath is fun although the Vanguard class is disappointing. You keep running out of stamina mid charge then you're surrounded by zombies. Might as well have stuck with Slasher. I always play fixer. We still can't get past level 28 on horde though. Hate the way barrels can only be placed in the area we're SUPPOSED to have moved to, not where we actually ARE :-( Also find the lack of jumping annoying. Fantastic game though. Yeah, played the first 2 left for bloods - really like the missions - they feel more threatening, but to my mind, not a patch on WWZ. Haven't played the latest one because the reviews were really bad. We loved Dying Light for multiplayer, but again, the reviews on Dying Light 2 really suck, so not much incentive to buy. :'( I know quite a few young gamer couples now - far better way to spend time together than watching TV. Not so sure about it when the kids hit 7, 8 and need attention later - it always seems like the kids get ignored. Really nice to chat to you buddy!

  12. I have a $1000+ motherboard. It was hugely overpriced but it's a superb product. Extremely versatile, super high quality, quite nicely designed, utterly dependable, and most importantly, very expandable. A few years ago, I could have gotten more expandability for half that, but now the whole industry has gone maximum greed mode.

  13. That's a ridiculous, excessive, thoughtlessly designed card. And Jayz I would challenge your reasoning on the price. You implied that the fact that it's almost twice as fast as the 3090 means it justifies twice the price of the 3090. By that logic, if they can double the flagship each time, it'll be fine to charge $8000 for the 6090?! 🤣🤣🤣 That's not how it works and you know it. Technological economies push prices DOWN not up (and yes, TMC charge more, and there other supply cost increases, but those apply to the 3090 as well). It's only because nvidia saw that desperate users would tolerate scalper prices during a global shortage which they primarily helped create, that they are now taking the piss on the price of this and charging the cost of a decent PC just for their near flagship card.

If the lower jaw were held immobile (in your hands or a clamp,) you could nod, thus the upper jaw would be the one applying pressure. Nobody is saying it's sensible! ;-)

  20. Seems to me your problem is that you are passionate about doing stuff, but absolutely undisciplined about the admin of tidying up afterwards. Reshaping your workshop won't fix that. Face it, you're a slob. Why don't you just pay a high schooler or college kid to list all your stuff? Or donate it to a bunch of charities for poor families? Pay the same kid to do a weekly clean up after your videos then he can tidy up after your weekly projects.

  29. It's always a matter of massively diminishing returns and cost/performance at the high end. Your figures show this MUCH more favourably than gamer's nexus. If this card was only a couple of hundred dollars more for 10% performance when I bout my 3090 last month, I would defiinitely have gone with it, but in Europe, it would be MUCH more of a difference (shipping weight? Exchange rates?) I actually prefer a softer backplate. It's hard enough to reach the screw holes as it is.

  32. Herman Miller Aeron FTW. I had a ton of back problems and went through a ton of of office chairs. Bought second hand Aeron 5-10 years ago - posture caused back problems instantly gone, and the chair is almost as good as new, no squeaks, incredibly comfortable. I weigh 244 pounds. 6'1" tall.

  37. nVidia has to be careful about price gouging people all the way to AMD, especially with so much residual resentment. Also, the question is, do they make enough from 5 million whales to offset the loss of 500 million regular customers, especially if those others go to the competition? Surprised that the 4090 will have LESS memory than current flagships. Also, every new card I've bough the past 15-20 years I've had to upgrade my power supply!

  38. @Transistor Jump No, not a me problem. I always buy PSUs with extra headroom, and I try to buy GPUs near or at the leading edge. I don't know how many GPUs you've bought in 8 years, but I'm going to guess no more than two, if even that, and it you bought mid range cards then they're not pushing the PSU. It's conceivable taht youy massively overpowered your first PSU and have been growing into it ever since.

  40. ​@Transistor Jump I looked up my past cards and recommended PSU: a 560GTX - 450w, 780GTX - 600w, a Titan X also 600w, and an RTX 3090 - 750w. The two in the middle both used the same, but there has been a steady progression apart from that. I use a number of internal hard drives. I have used PSU configurator to decide which PSU to buy, but I don't think it can be argued given the evidence, that power usage has remained more or less constant. Indeed, isn't the entire argument against the 4000 series that they are continuing that progression to a ridiculous level? As a matter of curiosity, and not withstanding the mild winter, I barely have to turn my heating on this year in damp, coldish Britain because of the crazy heat put out by the 3090 and Threadripper CPU!
