  5. ***** I appreciate that you are trying not to vilify an entire group of 1.2 billion people because of the actions of a small minority, but the fact is, violence is hard coded into the doctrinal manual of Islam.  You asked about the most recent genocide - irrelevant. Islam has been scourging Europe and Northern Africa for 1400 years! Yes human beings are violent without the need for Islam, but the religion acts like a bonus modifier that increases and justifies in the minds of its followers, harming those who oppose it. Even MODERATE Muslims believe in death for apostates and those who insult Muhammad. So by all means, urge treating all people with respect, so long as they reciprocate, but please don't try to characterise Islam as not worthy of the most serious concern.

  6. devin callahan He didn't dismiss it as  "a worthless petty time filler" - I think you're projecting there. He said there's no honour in it, and I agree. Personally, I think concepts of honour that are settled by punching someone's lights our are pretty superficial and barbaric. To me, honour is being a good father who teaches his kids kindness and integrity; honour is being a good husband or boyfriend and treating your partner with respect; honour is paying your own way through life; honour is treating all people with respect; honour is doing that right thing even when it terrifies you.

Any country where the poor can still receive affordable healthcare. Any country that doesn't still despise 16% of its population because of the colour of the skin. Any country that hasn't been at war for 95% of its existence. I could continue, but I'm sure you get the point.

The US has ridden its WW2 good will into the ground as it rapidly becomes exactly the fascist state that you claim it saved us from. Do we continue to thank the Visigoths for saving us from the Romans? No, because you get judged by your current behaviour, not what you did waaaay in the past. And right now, the US is looking like one of the greatest threats to global freedom and stability.

  10. It's a simple matter of the pool of people that you have to choose from, and the resources available to throw behind it. America has 350 million people to Britain's 60 million, and a ridiculously jingoistic and capitalistic society that ensures that sports are always well funded. The only countries that are exceptionally successful at sport either have large populations (Russia, China, USA) or they focus very strongly on particular sports (Britain cycling, Australia swimming, China table tennis, America basketball).

  11. Chris Dalton Nobody is disputing that you're different, but to return to the OP's comment, different is not better. There was a time was all disputes were settled in blood, and the strongest male took the mates. But society has progressed. The thing that allowed us to survive as a species was the fact that we used our brains, and we used tools. It's as valid now for someone to shoot you in the face, as to stand in front of you with fists raised. I appreciate that facing your fear has value, but in this case, the risks seem disproportionate to the benefits.

  13. Joseph escabar People regularly risk their lives to get in to Australia, Britain, and many other countries. And most of Europe has open borders to other Europeans anyway. You really need to get over the idea that America is a beacon that lights the planet. Yes, it still has some good qualities. It is a hub of technological and medical innovation, it makes some great movies, and some truly breath-taking scenery, but these are MASSIVELY outweighed by its rapidly growing negatives. Perhaps it WAS an amazing place, and its constitution was once the envy of the world, but now it's become fat, corrupt, lazy, and increasingly fascistic. In short, it's just another empire on its way out, just like the British, Islamic and Roman empires before it.

  18. The difficulty in his case, is that the proper channels were part of the system covering up the wrongdoing, and he TRIED to go through them, and was blocked. I think Assange very correctly characterises the situation here when he talks about America's desire for ruthless power being greater than it's desire to be seen as righteous.

  19. The first second I saw him I though Shkrelli has aspergers and doesn't understand the normal rules of social interaction or behaviour. This interview absolutely confirms my suspicions. He plays chess with a girl who can't play, berates her inability to play then says good game at the end. This piece humanised him somewhat, but frankly I still see him as a loathsome worm.

  20. What a profound and beautiful documentary. I can think of no greater control in one's life than to decide when it ends. To go to somewhere beautiful, and spend your final hours there is either enough to change your mind and give you hope, or see you off with a tranquil mind. Persuading people not to do it is important, but recognising their right to do so is also important.

  24. The met has always treated its officers as disposable pawns to be treated like dirt, used up and spat out. I can't stand the police, in general but still I see them as a necessary evil, and the way that they are treated by the met is disgusting. In many ways they have less rights than 16 year-olds working in MacDonalds. I've known several members of the Met who were decent, honourable men, and it sickens me to see them treated so badly when they do such an important job in our capital city. This guy is apparently at the high end, and his mental well being is utterly inconsequential to his employers. Is it any wonder that the police have got attitude problems? I respect any policeman trying to do the job with integrity.
