  2. Brave perhaps, intelligent definitely not. They could have spent that time searching for things that would increase their own chances of survival. "Stiff upper lip" was a piece of emotional manipulation perpetrated upon the victim class by the powerful.

  3.  @dfuher968  I get that, but the choice was not "Do nothing, and let the family survive." There was a "Do something else and try to survive" option as well.
