With SO much death and maltreatment throughout history (including two world wars since), the Titanic still has a special place of pathos, perhaps because it was so well documented, or because it was such a contrast between the optimism of the voyage, and the fate of the passengers. Also, to me, that they sunk into that cold, dark, deep ocean gives it an extra frisson of sadness. That story with the mother and the piano is heartbreaking.
