  4. Absolutely fascinating, but such slavish adherrance to historical connections is what makes the English language so difficult to learn and spell, even for natives. Given that the etymology of the word doubt has nothing to do with its actual usage, and that English is the most learned language in the world, I think it's high time that the entire vocabulaty of the language was reparsed and spelled as each word sounds, which would then help with pronunciation.
