I'm of the opinion that NO customer data should be stored online. Everything should have a hard firewall. Until then, the only solution is MASSIVE fines that break these companies, and force them to take it seriously. My 84 year old mother can't "take data security seriously;" she can barely operate a mobile phone, and everything stresses her out. This shouldn't be HER problem.

@xxTHExxABYSSxx Absolutely NOT legally her problem. The service provider is the one legally responsible. Why do you think Apple is being fined a billion and not their users?

@CrispinTato Who said it was the equivalent of being behind a firewall. And why do you think people SHOULD be digitally literate? Computers are simply tools; frequently unwelcome tools. People should not have to engage with them any more than they have to, especially as they do so through their phones, which removes the "computer" aspect still further.

@2Eil She lives in a tower block in Hastings where the land line connections were removed. Also, is she not entitled to the convenience of a phone anywhere she goes? Also, EVERY service she engages is, especially the doctor and the council, insists that she does so via a mobile phone.

@chadd990 I appreciate that taking data offline makes corporate lives more difficult. Remember 20 years ago, and for all of human history before that, when that's how things used to be? Sacrificing the entire population for the convenience of companies that see your data as a tradable asset, not something that can be used to destroy your life seems ridiculous to me, given how incredibly frivolous they treat it. The banks manage to protect it, so it is clearly simply a lack of will by these companies.
